Foreign Ministry Spokesman Kong Quan's Comment on the so-called Symposium on Taiwan Constitutional Reform and US-Taiwan-China Relations
2004-10-11 00:00

Q: it is said that Formosan Association for Public Affairs and some other organizations held a Symposium on Taiwan Constitutional Reform and US-Taiwan-China Relations at the Capitol Hill in Washington. What's your comment on this?

A: Regardless of China's firm objections, the United States connived at the Symposium on Taiwan constitutional reform at the Capitol Hill sponsored by a few Taiwanese pro-independence organizations and allowed Lee Teng-hui, a notorious pro-independence element in Taiwan, to spread separatist remarks on the occasion. Such behavior violates the commitments repeatedly reaffirmed by US leaders, who promised to abide by the one-China policy, observe the three Sino-US joint communiques and stand against Taiwan independence. The behavior sent gravely wrong signals to the pro-independence forces in Taiwan. China firmly opposes such behavior and has lodged serious representations with the US side.

At present, the separatist activities of the pro-independence forces in Taiwan pose the biggest threat to the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. China has requested the US to faithfully honor its commitments to China on the Taiwan issue, take actions to clear up the negative impacts resulted from this wrong practice and stop sending wrong signals to the pro-independence forces in Taiwan, so as to avoid causing new damage to the peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits and Sino-US relations.
