Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao's Remarks on the UN Security Council's Resolution on the Darfur Issue
2007-08-02 00:00

Q: On July 31, the United Nation's Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1769, deciding to deploy the AU-UN hybrid peace-keeping mission in Darfur region. What's your comment on this?

A: China welcomes the unanimous adoption of Resolution 1769 by the Security Council, which authorizes the deployment of an AU-UN hybrid peace-keeping mission in Darfur. This is an important step in promoting the resolution of the Darfur issue. We hope the relevant parties cherish the current good momentum in resolving the Darfur issue, take full advantage of the three-party mechanism of consultation between the Sudanese Government, the UN and the AU and ensure the smooth implementation of the resolution.

The peace-keeping mission is only one way to resolve the Darfur issue. The international community should stick to the "dual-track" strategy, accelerating the political process in Darfur, helping the Sudanese Government improve the humanitarian situation and promoting reconstruction and development in the region. This is the important premise for realizing lasting peace in Darfur.
