On August 8th, New York time, at the instigation of the Taiwan authorities, a handful of countries like Gambia wrote a letter to UN Secretary-General, asking the 56th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) to review the question of so-called Taiwan’s “participation” in the UN in an attempt to create “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan”.  This blatantly tramples the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and constitutes all the more a gross interference in China’s internal affairs, to which we express our strong indignation and firm opposition.

There is only one China in the world.  Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory and the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the entire Chinese people.  This is an indisputable fact universally recognized by the international community.  Thirty years ago, Resolution No. 2758 was adopted by a overwhelming majority at the 26th Session of the UN General Assembly, resolving once and for all the question of China’s representation at the UN politically, legally and in terms of the procedures.  The United Nations is an international inter-governmental organization made up of sovereign states.  Taiwan, as a province of China, is by no means qualified to participate in the UN and its specialized agencies.

The General Committee of the UNGA has since 1993 explicitly refused to include the issue of Taiwan on the agenda of the UNGA sessions, fully demonstrating the unwavering position of the majority of the UN member states to safeguard the authority of the UN Charter and Resolution No. 2758 of the UNGA.  It also shows that any attempt against the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the will of the UN member states has no support and is also futile.

The question of Taiwan is purely China’s internal affairs.  Early realization of the reunification of the motherland is the shared aspiration of all the Chinese people including Taiwan compatriots.  No attempt to split the motherland will be allowed by the Chinese people including Taiwan compatriots.  Realizing the great cause of the reunification of the motherland conforms to the will of the people and is an irresistible historical trend.
