Q: It is reported that US President Bush made an official statement on global climate change on June 11th before his visit to Europe. What is your comment?

A: We have taken note that the relevant remarks of the US side highlight the importance of scientific research and technological development to solve the problem of climate change, but insist on its position of not ratifying the Kyoto Protocol.

The Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol are important embodiment of the common will and interest of international community on the question of global climate change. The international community will find it difficult to accept any attempt to abandon the Protocol and start all over again in violation of the principles of the Convention.

It is also unreasonable to refuse to ratify the Kyoto Protocol under the pretext of some developing countries not shouldering the responsibility of reducing their emission.

China is willing to make, together with the rest of international community and within the framework of the Convention and the Protocol, unremitting efforts to deal with the climate change to the benefit of future generations.
