On October 20, 2025, the inauguration ceremony of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) was held in Hong Kong, China. Nearly 200 representatives from more than 30 Founding States of the IOMed, as well as from various sectors of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), attended the event. Vice Foreign Minister Hua Chunying was present.
Hua noted that in just five months, the IOMed Convention was signed and brought into force and the Organization inaugurated. This speed is unprecedented in the history of establishing international organizations. This fully demonstrates that the establishment of the IOMed echos the call of our times and enjoys extensive support from the international community. The vision behind the establishment of the IOMed is highly consistent with that of the Global Governance Initiative. It upholds reconciliation, cooperation and harmony, adheres to fairness, justice and equity, is committed to extensive consultation and joint contribution for shared benefit, advocates a people-centered approach, and values real actions. The IOMed will contribute to improving the international legal system and give a boost to the building of a community with a shared future for humanity. The establishment of the IOMed will also forge Hong Kong's new title of "the capital of mediation". China welcomes more countries to join and make full use of the IOMed to make new contributions to the peaceful settlement of international disputes.
Chief Executive of the HKSAR John KC Lee attended and delivered remarks, stating that Hong Kong will continue to fully leverage its strengths under "One Country, Two Systems" to support the development of the IOMed and the cause of dispute settlement. Representatives from Contracting States such as Nicaragua, Venezuela, the Republic of the Congo, Kiribati, Pakistan, Kenya and Dominica also delivered speeches, speaking highly of the significance of the IOMed. They expressed expectations that the IOMed would serve as a platform to promote the peaceful settlement of international disputes and contribute to the building of a more just and equitable international order.
On May 30, 2025, the signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation was held in Hong Kong, China. Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, attended and signed the Convention on behalf of China. The Convention entered into force on August 29, 2025, and currently has 37 Signatory States, 8 of which have ratified the Convention. The IOMed will supplement existing international litigation and arbitration mechanisms and provide a new platform for all parties to peacefully settle international disputes through mediation.
