April 18, 2000-- Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi said on April 18 that the Chinese government  wishes to express its admiration and thanks to all the countries
which upheld justice for their support of China.

Sun made the remark following the report that the U.N. Commission on Human Right decided at its 56th Session to take no action on the U.S.-sponsored draft resolution on the so-called "Human Rights Situation in China."

This is the ninth time since 1990 that the Commission rejected  an anti-China draft resolution.

Sun said that the Chinese government has all along attached  importance to human rights and has made unremitting efforts to  promote and protect the human rights of the Chinese people.

"Now the human rights situation in China is the best ever in  the country's history," he pointed out, adding that this is  universally recognized by the international community.

However, he said, the United States, turning a blind eye to all these facts and driven by the need of its domestic partisan  politics, once again tabled an anti-China draft resolution in an  attempt to interfere in China's internal affairs under the pretext of the so-called human rights issue and tarnish China's image on  the international stage.

Such move contravenes the purposes and principles of the U.N. Charter and runs against the prevailing trend in the international human rights field which is for dialogue and against confrontation, Sun pointed out.

"The move can lead nowhere but self-isolation and self-defeat of the United States," the spokesman added. Although the U.S. exerted enormous pressure on the member states of the Commission, yet no country co-sponsored its draft resolution. The anti-China  farce had few supporters. Facts speak louder than words and justice will prevail, Sun said.

Sun Stressed that the anti-China resolutions of this kind have been foiled for the ninth time once again proved that the attempt to interfere in other countries' internal affairs and pursue hegemonism and power politics under the pretext of the so-called human rights issue is like an arrow at the end of its flight and is against people's will, and that confrontation approach is doomed to failure.

Sun said that the Chinese government has always maintained that all countries should conduct dialogue and exchanges on the question of human rights on the basis of equality and mutual respect, with a view to enhancing mutual understanding, expanding
common ground and reducing difference.

"We are ready to work with other members of the international community in a joint effort to promote a sound development of the international human rights cause in accordance with the purpose and principles of the U.N. Charter," Sun said.      (End)
