Spokesperson on the question of Chinese Taipei's participation in the Informal APEC Leadership Meeting (19/10/2001)
2004-08-16 18:34

It is learnt that the Taiwan Authorities have announced not to send people to attend the Informal APEC Leadership Meeting to be held on 20 and 21 October. The Foreign Ministry Spokesman pointed out that, as the host to the APEC meeting, we welcome all APEC members to be at the meeting. In accordance with the principle of treating everyone as equals and with courtesy, we have provided corresponding protocol and facilities to all members. We have indicated to Chinese Taipei on many occasions that we welcome them to attend the Informal APEC Leadership Meeting in Shanghai and the series of other activities. We have extended our invitation.

The Spokesman pointed out that there are clear cut provisions under the relevant APEC MOUs on the question of Chinese Taipei’s participation in the Informal APEC Leadership Meeting. Usual practices have been established at the various meetings. The Chinese Taipei has not put forward a nominee that goes along with these provisions and usual practices. We wish to express our regret.
