Today marks the 56th anniversary of the victory of
the War of Resistance Against Japan. 56 years ago, under the
joint attack of the Chinese people and the forces for
justice of the world, Japan formally signed letters of
surrender, announcing the total bankruptcy of Japan's
militant aggression and expansion policy and the ultimate
victory of the world's anti-fascist war.
During the arduous and heroic war, the Chinese
people fought courageously and made huge national sacrifice
to achieve the final victory over the seemingly unbeatable
Japanese militarism. It is the first ever total victory of
the Chinese people against foreign invasion and humiliation
since the Opium War. On the occasion of the 56th anniversary
of the victory of the War of Resistance, we wish to express
our deep condolences and high respect to the national heroes
who sacrificed their lives during the war. Our condolences
also go to our compatriots who were slaughtered by the
invaders. We wish to express our heart-felt thanks to the
overseas Chinese and all foreign friends who had selflessly
supported and participated in the Resistance War.
The aggressive war by Japan's militarists
brought about scourge to the people of China and other
victimized countries of Asia. It also incurred severe
sufferings to the Japanese people. "History, if not
forgotten, can serve as a guide to the future." Only by
remembering that horrible history and draw profound lessons
from it, can we prevent the recurrence of the historical
tragedy. Any attempt to deny or glorify Japanese militant's
aggressive history will only be a move in the wrong
direction. It will inevitably hinder Japan's real
reconciliation with other Asian countries and meet with
resistance and strong opposition from people of all
victimized Asian countries, including people from Japan.
