Spokesperson on Chen Shuibian's stopover in Houston in the U.S(05/06/2001)
2004-08-16 18:37

Q: It is reported that Chen Shuibian had a stopover in Houston in the U.S. and met with several U.S. congressmen after winding up a visit to Latin America. What’s your comment on it?

A: We are opposed to any form of offical contacts and exchanges between any country having diplomatic ties with China and the Taiwan authorities. In disregard of China’s opposition, the U.S. Government insisted on allowing Chen Shuibian to stop over in New York and Houston and meet with some U.S. congressmen. This has violated the three Sino-U.S. Joint Communiques and its relevant commitments, boosting the arrogance of the Taiwan “independence forces” in their efforts to sabotage cross-Straits relations and interfering in China’s internal affairs. The Chinese side is firmly opposed to it.

We demand the U.S. Government abide by the one-China  policy, the three Sino-U.S. Joint Communiques and its relevant  commitments, not go into any form of offical contacts and exchanges with the Taiwan authorities, not permit Chen Shuibian and other Taiwan political figures to go to the United States to engage in activities aimed at spliting China, and stop interfering in China’s internal affairs by using the Taiwan issue.
