On 7 August (New York time), Gambia and a handful of
countries, at the instigation of the Taiwan authorities,
wrote to the UN Secretary-General, calling for the
examination of the so-called Taiwans
representation in the United Nations at the 57th
Session of the UN General Assembly. This is a grave
violation of the purposes and principles of the UN Charter,
an infringement upon Chinas sovereignty and
territorial integrity and an interference in Chinas
internal affairs. We hereby wish to express our strong
indignation and resolute opposition to the proposal.
There is only one China in the world. Taiwan
is an inalienable part of Chinas territory. The United
Nations is an inter-governmental international organization
of sovereign states. As a province of China, Taiwan is by no
means entitled to join the UN and its specialized agencies
in any name or in any form. Resolution 2758 adopted by the
26th UN General Assembly in 1971 recognized the Government
of the Peoples Republic of China as the sole legal
government representing the entire Chinese people. It has
solved once and for all, in the political, legal and
procedural terms, the issue of Chinas representation
in the UN.
Since 1993, the UN General Affairs
Committee has for nine successive years refused to include
the so-called question of Taiwans
participation in the UN in the agenda of the UN
General Assembly. This fully shows that the stance of the
Chinese Government on this issue enjoys extensive
understanding and support from the international community.
Achieving the reunification of the motherland
is the common aspiration of the Chinese people on both sides
of the Taiwan Straits. It is the trend of the times.
However, the Taiwan authorities still reject the one China
principle and even call for one side, one
country. In an open challenge to the UN General
Assembly Resolution 2758, Taiwan has kept on creating
two Chinas or one China, one Taiwan
at the UN and calling itself as a sovereign
state. Such a move runs against the trend of the
history and the will of the people. It is doomed to yet
another failure.
