August 10, 2000---In its solemn
representations to the U.S. Government for allowing
Taiwan’s new leader Chen Shui-bian to make a stopover
in the U.S. on route to Central America in mid-August, the
Chinese Government has expressed strong resentment and firm
opposition.
While commenting on the matter on
August 7, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao said that
China has urged the U.S. to match its words with deeds, and
honor the three Sino-U.S. joint communiqués and its
relevant commitments, so as to avoid severe damage to the
bilateral relations.
The Taiwan
authorities often play tricks to cover their real motives of
creating “two Chinas” or “one China, one
Taiwan”, Zhu said.
The Chinese
Government has all along been opposed to any exchange and
contact of an official nature between the U.S. and Taiwan
and U.S. permission of “transit stops” in the
U.S. by high-level Taiwan political figures, Zhu stressed.
