10 Questions on Taiwan Question (Ⅴ)

【In disregard of China’s solemn position and firm opposition and with the connivance and arrangement of the US government, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi went ahead with the visit to China’s Taiwan region. This reckless move seriously infringe on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and severely violated the one-China principle and the three China-US Joint Communiqué. The Chinese government has taken lawful and justified countermeasures to uphold its sovereignty and territorial integrity. However, instead of self-reflection and admitting its mistakes, the US side made absurd remarks and even put the blame on China like a thief crying “Stop thief!” The Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe is going to publish a series of articles to share the truth, introduce China’s clear position and expose lies, so as to set the record straight.】

Q5: Why the Chinese military drills in the waters off the Taiwan Island are necessary and legitimate?

Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. The Chinese military drills in the waters off the Taiwan Island are a necessary and legitimate measure to uphold its sovereignty and territorial integrity and a necessary and legitimate countermeasure against the “Taiwan independence” separatist forces and foreign interference. China’s competent authorities have issued safety alerts and travel warnings in advance. So what we have done is consistent with international law and international practices. Anyone who try to use that to prove China to be a so-called threat will only prove themselves to be rather dark inside, because they choose to view the incident selectively, ignoring the basic fact that things have ended up like this all because Pelosi went ahead with a wrong decision in disregard of China’s repeated serious representations and the repeated dissuasion from various parties.

China has the right to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The tensions in the Taiwan Strait is fundamentally caused by the US connivance at the third highest-ranking official of the US government to take a military aircraft to visit China’s Taiwan region in disregard of China’s strong opposition and serious representations. This is a major incident that seeks to upgrade the substantive exchanges between the United States and Taiwan. It causes serious harm to the one-China principle and to China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. China has repeatedly made clear its stern opposition to the incident and stressed its firm opposition to separatism aimed at “Taiwan independence” and foreign interference. China will allow no room for any form of “Taiwan independence” forces.

As we have seen over the past decades, the US and the US-led NATO countries have selectively applied international law. They made up various pretexts such as so-called possession of weapons of mass destruction to picture other countries as threats - and sometimes even without any valid reason - to blatantly launch military strikes and even unleash wars on sovereign countries. Over the past nearly two decades, the US conducted over 90,000 air strikes in countries including Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, which may have killed up to 48,000 civilians. Between 1947 and 1989, the US engaged in 64 covert attempts and six open attempts at regime change. The US’s acts of regime change remain unchecked even after the end of the Cold War. For years, the US has created political unrest in Latin America, played a part in the “Arab Spring”, and instigated color revolutions in Europe and Asia. Senior US officials even went to the streets themselves in some of those countries to support opposition forces in stoking political confrontation. The US and other NATO countries involved have never done any soul-searching on these tragedies, never felt even a tinge of guilt for the serious ramifications and catastrophes they caused, and never ever made an apology to the victims in those countries or given them any compensation.

China had historically been a victim of foreign aggression. Today, the US and several of its sidekicks still grossly interfere in our internal affairs and undermine our sovereignty and security from time to time. But China is not the China 120 years ago, and we refuse to be treated like Iraq, Syria, or Afghanistan. The Chinese people will never allow any foreign force to bully, oppress, or subjugate us. Anyone who would attempt to do so will find themselves on a collision course with a great wall of steel forged by over 1.4 billion Chinese people. The position of the Chinese government and people on the Taiwan question is consistent. To uphold the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China is the firm will of the 1.4 billion Chinese people. We hope that the US and its sidekicks who style themselves as democracies will be very clear about that. They need to take seriously and respect the core interests and the firm will of the Chinese people, who account for one fifth of the world’s population.

Next Question: “Why China suspended China-U.S. talks on climate change?” is coming tomorrow.
