WASHINGTON, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Direct Investment in the United States shows enormous potential to create economic growth and Americans need to better understand the rapidly changing balance between the two countries.

That's according to a report released by the Asia Society on Wednesday.

"We estimate that Chinese firms will place some 1 trillion to 2 trillion dollars in direct investment around the world over the coming decade," said the authors of the report, economist Daniel Rosen and Thilo Hanemann.

In 2010 alone, Chinese FDI in the U.S. totaled 5 billion dollars. The report estimates that Chinese firms in the U.S. have already created more than 10,000 American jobs.

The report, which is the most comprehensive and updated study of Chinese FDI in the U.S., was released days before the two coutries to hold the third meeting of Strategic and Economic Dialogue in Washington.

The new study warns that political barriers from Washington against Chinese FDI may squander immense opportunities for U.S. employment. It suggests that Washington needs to send "a clear and bipartisan message that Chinese investment is welcome."
