Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with President Lucio Gutierrez Borbua of the Republic of Ecuador (26/08/2003)

On August 26, 2003, Chinese President Hu Jintao and President Lucio Gutierrez Borbua of the Republic of Ecuador had an in-depth exchange of views on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of common concern at the Great Hall of the People.

Hu said over the past more than 20 years since the two countries established diplomatic ties, bilateral relations have seen steady development, with increased high-level exchanges, broadened exchanges and cooperation in various fields, and mutual understanding and support in international affairs. The two countries have broad common views on maintaining world peace, promoting common development and other significant issues. China will work together as always with Ecuador to promote the long-lasting, stable and all-round friendly cooperative relationship between the two countries to a new level in the new century.

Hu pointed out that the Chinese side pays attention to strengthening Sino-Ecuadorian economic and trade cooperation, and is willing to carry out multi-channel and multi-pattern cooperation with Ecuador under the principles of equality, mutual benefits and complementarity. China encourages and supports its enterprises to participate in Ecuadorian construction, and also welcomes Ecuadorian enterprises to invest in China.

The two leaders introduced to each other their domestic situation. Hu introduced to the Ecuadorian guest the Chinese government's principled stance on the Taiwan issue, and expressed appreciation for the reiteration by the Ecuadorian government that it adheres to the "one-China" policy. He also expressed thanks for the valuable support China has received from Ecuador in international affairs. Hu also positively appraised the endeavor Gutierrez has made since he took office to stabilize Ecuador’s political situation, advance the economic development and social justice, and wish Ecuadorian government and people would achieve more in their country’s construction.

Talking about Sino-Latin American relations, Hu said in the new century China proceeds from the strategic high of maintaining world peace, promoting common development and strengthening South-South cooperation, attaches special importance to Sino-Latin American relations, and is willing to reinforce dialogues and exchanges with Latin American countries, develop friendly cooperation and step up mutual coordination and support in international affairs, and jointly protect the interests of developing countries so as to build a long-term stable and all-round cooperative Sino-Ecuadorian relations of mutual benefit in the new centaury.

Gutierrez said the Ecuadorian people treasure their friendship and cooperation with the Chinese people. Over the past two decades, political ties between the two countries have developed smoothly, and cooperation in economy and trade, agriculture, culture and other fields has produced rich results. China is an ancient civilization and has made remarkable contributions to human development. Today's China is developing fast and is playing an increasingly important role in international affairs. He stressed that the Ecuadorian government is willing to strengthen bilateral relations, especially mutually-beneficial cooperation in energy, agriculture, mining, new and high-technology, telecommunications, tourism and other fields. He said he fully agreed with the five principles of peaceful coexistence advocated by China in international affairs, saying that Ecuador adheres to the "one-China" principle and supports the Chinese government's efforts to reunify the country with the policy of "one country, two systems." Ecuador is willing to work with China to promote friendly relations between Latin American countries and China to further strengthen cooperation between the the Andes Community and China.

After the talks, they attended a signing ceremony between the two countries for six cooperative documents involving economic and technological cooperation, phyto quarantine, crude oil, cultural exchanges, and some other fields.
