At the invitation of the Chinese side, the US
Assistant Secretary of State Dewey visited China from August
10 to 13, 2003.
Assistant Minister of Foreign
Affairs Shen Guofang held talks with Dewey. He mainly
briefed Dewey on the policies and measures concerning
population and family planning of China, as well as
cooperation conducted with the United Nations Population
Fund (UNFPA). Shen said that China welcomes US officials to
visit China more and eye-witness the achievements of UNFPA,
especially the positive contributions of UNFPA to the
sustainable development of China, so as to continue to offer
their support to UNFPA. The two sides also exchanged
opinions on other issues of common concern. Dewey met
respectively with officials of relevant departments of the
Ministry of Commerce and National Family Planning
Commission, and held an informal discussion with Chinese
non-governmental organizations engaged in population
research and practice.
The two sides agreed
that the above-mentioned activities help increase
understanding and eliminate misunderstanding and are of
positive significance to exchanges and cooperation in
related fields between the two countries. They also noted
they are willing to continue to hold dialogues and exchanges
on relevant issues on the basis of equality and mutual
respect.
