Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao's Remarks on French President Sarkozy's Meeting with the Dalai Lama
2008-12-08 15:21

Q: It is reported that French President Sarkozy who now holds the rotating EU presidency had a separate meeting with the Dalai Lama. What is China’s reaction to that?

A: Despite the strong opposition of the Chinese people and the repeated solemn representations of the Chinese Government, President Sarkozy insisted on meeting, in the dual capacities as French and EU rotating President, with the Dalai Lama, who is a political exile engaged in activities separating his motherland. The erroneous action of the French side grossly interferes in China's internal affairs and severely hurts the feelings of the Chinese people. The Chinese Government expresses its resolute opposition and strong dissatisfaction.

China has warned France lately on many occasions of the possible consequences, urging the French side to proceed from the overall interest of the Sino-French and Sino-EU relations, properly handle the Tibet-related issues so as to create essential atmosphere and conditions for the normal development of the China-France and China-EU relations.

Regrettably, on major issues involving China's core interests, the French leader is bent on doing things that have severely undermined the bilateral relations.

China does not want to see the current situation. Neither do the overwhelming majority of those committed to Sino-French and Sino-EU friendship in all walks of life. The French side should bear full responsibility for it.

I would reaffirm that China has always valued its relations with France. We urge the French side to take China's position and concerns seriously, adopt a proper approach and take concrete measures to correct its mistake, so that the bilateral relations can grow steadily and soundly.
