Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao's Comments on China's Election as a Member of the UN Human Rights Council

On May 9, the 60th UN General Assembly elected the UN Human Rights Council. China became a member of the Council with 146 votes.

The Chinese Government has always been dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedom of its people, participating actively in international human rights dialogues and cooperation. China supports UN Human Rights Council and has made positive contribution to its establishment.

As a member of the UN Human Rights Council, the Chinese government will comprehensively promote its human rights cause and earnestly fulfill relevant obligations under international Human Rights conventions in accordance with its constitutional principle of "the state respects and safeguards human rights". China will make joint efforts with other members to ensure the Council to respect different historical, cultural and religious background of various countries and regions, promote dialogue between different civilizations, cultures and religions, attach equal importance to civil and political rights as well as economic, social and cultural rights, and deal with human rights issues in a fair, objective and non-selective way so as to promote international human rights cause.
