Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao's Comment on the Formal Inauguration of New Iraqi Government
2006-05-24 00:00

Q: Recently, the US Defense Ministry released its 2006 "Annual Report on the Military Power of China ". What comment does China have?

A: Holding on to the "Cold-War Mentality", the US Defense Ministry's report exaggerates China's military power and military expenditure. Out of an ulterior motive, the report continues to spread the theory of "China Threat", which is a serious violation of the norms governing international relations and gross interference in China's internal affairs. China expresses strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition to it.

China is a peace-loving country, adhering to the road of peaceful development and pursuing a defensive national policy. China is universally recognized as a major force for peace in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large. As a sovereign state, China is definitely entitled to the enhancement of national defense for its security and territorial integrity.

Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. The Chinese Government adheres to the policy of "peaceful reunification and one country, two systems". We are ready to exert the greatest sincerity and make the utmost efforts to pursue the prospect of peaceful reunification of our homeland. However, we will never tolerate "Taiwan independence", or allow anyone to separate Taiwan from China by whatever means. We urge the US to adhere to the One-China policy, honor its commitment to abiding by the three Sino-US Joint Communiqués, oppose to "Taiwan Independence", stop selling Taiwan any weapons and refrain from sending any wrong signals to the secessionist forces of "Taiwan Independence".
