Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Kong Quan's Comment on Yasukuni Shrine Homage by Some Japanese Cabinet Ministers and Congressmen
2005-08-17 00:00

Q: It is reported that on August 14th and 15th some Japanese cabinet ministers and congressmen paid homage to the Yasukuni Shrine, which worships the Class A War Criminals of the World War II.What comment does the Chinese side have on that?

A: Correctly understanding and treating its history of militarist aggression is essential for Japan to win trust from its Asian neighboring countries and the international community. It is also a political foundation to improve China-Japan relations. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the victories of China's Resistance War against Japanese Aggression and World Anti-fascism War, some Japanese politicians still paid homage to the Yasukuni Shrine, which worships the Class A World War II War Criminals--the representative figures of militarists. This indicates that they have yet to make a correct choice expected by the international community on such an important issue. As the biggest victimized country of the Japanese militarist aggression, we strongly demand that the Japanese government take concrete actions to face the history and remorse on its aggression, rather than do anything which would hurt the feelings of the people of the victimized countries.
